Conservationist Jeff Kutz of PRETOMA reports good news from Costa Rica.

Corozaliton Beach, Costa Rica.

Corozalito Beach, Costa Rica.

Below is a report I received by email from researchers funded by the RIESTER Foundation to study the nesting habits of sea turtles at Corazalito in Costa Rica.  Corazalito is a rare nesting site where thousands of sea turtles lay their eggs.  For the past several years, the location was attacked daily by poachers who would steal the eggs and sell them.  RIESTER Foundation funding has provided security to protect the beach from poachers, and dedicated researchers from universities around the world to document activity at the site and tag the visiting turtles.

Subject: Good news from Corazalito!

Great news!  Last Sunday night (the 20th) we observed and tagged a rare Pacific green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nesting at our project in Corozalito, which has been extended until January 31st.   She was the only turtle on the beach this night, and our team followed her meter wide track to discover where she was preparing her egg chamber (over 60cm deep!).

After depositing 87 eggs, researchers applied tag numbers NX786 and NX787 to the fore-flippers of this previously unobserved female for future identification.  This specific green sea turtle had a carapace (upper shell) 86.2cm long [2.8ft] and 76.5cm wide [2.5ft], and its relocated nest represents another piece of hope for the future of green turtles in Costa Rica.  We hope to see her return again this year!

TED talk: Sustainability and resiliency.

Creating a sustainable planet, sustainable and successful brands and promoting a sustainable economic system is at the core of who we are at RIESTER. This past year has been challenging for us and for our clients from a business perspective. We’ve learned some lessons about sustainability and resiliency in our businesses.

We invite you to take some time to watch this outstanding talk from TED by Rob Hopkins, founder of the Transition Towns Movement. Like most TED talks, this is a provocative, insightful and informative perspective on some of the great issues of our times.

TED is a non-profit dedicated to spreading great ideas.

Greenbuild is in Phoenix. Tom Ortega is leading the way.

Greenbuild, the largest conference in the world dedicated to promoting sustainable construction and design, is in Phoenix this week. My business partner and RIESTER’s Executive Creative Director, Tom Ortega, was featured on ABC News last night discussing sustainable building design. Ortega used his soon to be built home as an example of a way to live that lightens his family’s footprint.

Sustainability communications is an area of expertise for RIESTER and is especially relevant this week with Greenbuild Conference in Phoenix. Ortega is not only leading by example as he prepares to break ground on his family’s home, he is also a leader in creating campaigns that effectively communicate why it is important and necessary to live lives with sustainability in mind. His new home will be powered with solar electricity, he will be harvesting rainwater on his property and the home will be built with sustainable materials.

Sustainability is more than a buzz word. We all must adopt more sustainable lifestyles if we hope to pass on a healthy and prosperous world to our children and grandchildren.

RIESTER invites you to consider the Blue Marble.

Our home, this small blue planet floating in a sea of black, is a place of wonder. We know more about it than any generation that preceded us. Our generation, due to sheer numbers alone, is threatening and destroying various ecosystems within the larger planetary ecosystem.

The photo below, known as The Blue Marble, was taken in 1972 on the Apollo 17 mission. Apollo 17 was the final manned mission to the moon. This particular image is especially noteworthy to us: It is the first clear image of the illuminated face of the earth. With the distribution of this image, humans could see their planet suspended in a sea of black and get a new perspective on their home. The image has been distributed so widely that we take it for granted today. Yet this one photograph represents a revolution. For the millions of years that our ancestors lived on this planet, they never had the perspective that this one image provides.

We are Brand Activists for our clients mobilizing our expertise in marketing and communications with a creative flair that speaks to our target audiences. Some of our campaigns, like the STAND FOR LESS campaign, allow us to express our passion for this small blue marble we call home.

RIESTER LAUNCHES LANDMARK SUSTAINABILITY CAMPAIGN.

RIESTER unveils the first, fully integrated sustainability movement.
As our nation’s cities grow, natural resources are being squeezed, air quality is being threatened and landfills are running out of room. On April 8, RIESTER responded in force by launching STAND FOR LESS in San Diego, the first fully integrated sustainability campaign for a major U.S. city.

With the California Department of Conservation at the helm, STAND FOR LESS is a first-of-its-kind, cooperative campaign that brings together utilities, corporations, local and state agencies. Their collaborative purpose is to motivate residents and businesses to use less water, consume less energy, drive fewer miles and create less trash by recycling.

At the kick-off event, Bridgett Luther, Director of the California Department Conservation, put it succinctly: “We have the policies, now we need the people.” Joining her at the gathering were San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, actor and activist Ed Begley, Jr., and partners from both the public and private sector.

The campaign practices what it preaches by using short form TV and radio commercials. This includes four :15 TV commercials and six :10 radio commercials. RIESTER went as far as to produce all four TV spots in a single day on a simple, white set. This efficient approach minimized the potential carbon footprint of the production.  All of the TV and radio spots direct San Diego residents and businesses to standforless.com, an on-line community that features blogs, sustainability information and access to campaign components.

As STAND FOR LESS grows and gains momentum throughout San Diego, it is setting an example for cities nationwide. Whether they have 50,000 residents or 5,000,000, they, too, can STAND FOR LESS and respond to a growing crisis.
